Work in our research group is critical and is linked by two areas of emphasis that connect projects that might otherwise sit apart in different areas of psychology and the social sciences. Some projects belong to one line, others draw on both.

Culture and Meanings

We examine how meanings are produced, shared, challenged and transformed — in everyday life, public discourse and institutional settings. This involves close attention to communication, representation, social power, and social knowledge and to the cultural conditions through which people and collectives interpret their worlds.

Marginality and Social Inequalities

We focus on groups and social positions whose lives are shaped by inequalities (monetary or otherwise), exclusion and unequal power. Across topics such as homelessness, poverty, decision making in resource poor settings, and media representations and public understanding, we ask how marginality is experienced, communicated and contested.
